Attorney James Lowe, MD, JD is a rare ‘doctor-lawyer’
Dr James Lowe is a neurosurgeon and attorney with a diverse educational background, and unique experience and expertise within the community of medical malpractice attorneys.
After graduating with honors from Harvard in 1985, Dr. Lowe began his formal medical education, attaining an MD degree from Temple Medical School in 1989. He then spent the next 6 years completing his residency and fellowship training in Neurosurgery and Spine Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. Upon completing his training in 1995, Dr. Lowe went into practice as a neurosurgeon serving the southern New Jersey area.

In 1998, Dr. Lowe became Board Certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery after passing all of the neurosurgical exams and meeting all of the Board’s rigorous requirements in the shortest amount of time possible. During his nearly three decades of practicing medicine, Dr. Lowe held memberships in the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurologic Surgeons, and the North American Spine Society. He remains a Fellow of the prestigious American College of Surgeons, and is also an active member of the American Spinal Injury Association.
Shortly after beginning his medical career, Dr. Lowe started and managed a neurosurgery practice, Lowe Neurosurgical Associates. In his clinical practice, Dr. Lowe cared for countless patients with a wide variety of neurological and musculoskeletal conditions, and performed complex surgeries on thousands of patients with both brain and spinal disorders. As an active member of the New Jersey medical community, Dr. Lowe also was appointed to leadership positions which included being elected as Chief of the Division of Neurosurgery, Chief of Spine Surgery, Medical Director of the Spine Institute, and Chairman of the Spinal Injury program at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center. Always a passionate advocate for quality medical care delivered safely, Dr. Lowe was actively involved in the patient safety processes embraced by the hospital programs he headed. He was a valued educator of staff physicians, nurses, and students of all types, on subjects related to neurosurgical care and best practices for quality patient care.
Throughout his entire medical career, Dr. Lowe has had the opportunity to participate extensively in the medical-legal system, gaining valuable experience in trial testimony and deposition testimony on behalf of his patients and other individuals with serious injuries and medical-legal claims. As both a treating physician and also a highly-qualified expert, Dr. Lowe has testified hundreds of times in deposition and trial settings. His skills at reviewing and understanding complex cases, and educating courts and juries about medical conditions suffered by injured patients, have proven to be an invaluable asset to attorneys across the country. In addition, Dr. Lowe has been an invited speaker and guest lecturer in medical-legal education, including educating law students and attorneys on topics such as spine anatomy and emergency evaluation and treatment of patients with a wide variety of neurological and neurosurgical diseases.
Inspired by his wife, Virginia Graziani Lowe, MD, JD (also a physician-attorney), Dr. Lowe attended law school at the Mitchel Hamline School of Law in St. Paul, MN, while continuing to work full-time as a spinal surgical specialist. He graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2020, and became a member of the Pennsylvania Bar in April 2021.
In late 2021, Dr. Lowe suffered a visual impairment which was ultimately diagnosed as a rare and untreatable genetic condition which prohibited him from continuing his career as a neurosurgeon. He left his medical practice in December of 2021, although he still holds licenses to practice medicine in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. In 2023, Dr. Lowe started his solo law firm, James Lowe, MD Law, LLC. He now devotes 100% of his professional time to representing the interests of injured patients and their families.
Dr. Lowe is a member of the Philadelphia Trial Lawyers Association, the American Association for Justice, the Philadelphia Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.
